MICRODERMABARASION

Microdermabrasion is a progressive, non-invasive approach to skin care which results in immediate improvement in your skin’s appearance and texture.  Microdermabrasion has been used successfully for years in Europe and is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in this country. This exfoliating procedure may be performed individually, as an adjunct with other skin treatments, or in a series by itself for revitalizing and maintaining the skin’s appearance and smoothness.  The technology at Avanti is gentle enough for the face, but may also be incorporated to address problem areas elsewhere on the body.  There is no special preparation before the visit or any recuperation after.   The ExcellaDerm™  M2000 used at Avanti Skin Center is a physician grade machine with multiple patents providing the most effective treatment possible. The professionals at Avanti are trained and experienced in adjusting the treatment parameters for maximum comfort and benefit.

Prior to the microdermabrasion, the skin will be thoroughly but gently cleansed to remove excess oil and all makeup.  During the procedure, a precise stream of very fine crystals is directed through the ExcellaDerm™ hand piece onto the skin to loosen the layer of dead skin cells that form on the surface.  It then suctions away both the skin debris and the crystals to reveal fresh invigorated skin.  Typically, only the uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is removed.  This is why there is minimal discomfort and virtually no recuperation.  In select cases, however, a more aggressive abrasion may be chosen and appropriate aftercare will be discussed.

The advantage of this technology over the newer “diamond wand” methods of microdermabrasion is the three dimensional effect on the irregular skin surface, even within pore cavities, as opposed to a two dimensional surface sandpaper effect with the wand. In addition, with the ExcellaDerm™ microdermabrasion technology, there is no concern about the risk of infection or transmission of blood particles due to inadequate sterilization of the reusable wands on other machines.

Microdermabrasion is a valuable skin care tool in and of itself, but does not take the place of either laser procedures or therapeutic skin care products.  Microdermabrasion is also an excellent adjunct to other light and laser skin  procedures.  The procedure may impart a slight redness to the skin but this will subside within a few hours.  Although uncommon, some patients may experience blushing of the skin from increased blood flow, which will fade gradually over a day or two.  Almost everyone could benefit from microdermabrasion. Patients who are taking certain medications or who have an inflammatory skin condition may need to postpone treatment.  Your Avanti skin care professional will advise you of any special considerations.
