Healthy, young skin is smooth and firm, evenly colored, free of blemishes and wrinkles, and has no sun damage.  As we age, there is a decrease in collagen and elastin production that provides the elastic tone to the skin.  The amount of proteoglycans, (large water retaining molecules made of chains of polysaccarides) also decrease resulting in drier, looser skin.  When you add to this process the effect of ultraviolet damage from the sun, the appearance and structure of the skin further deteriorates.  Not only does the collagen break down more rapidly due to the sun, the remaining fibers become more cross linked and disorganized with resultant sagging and wrinkles.  Age spots, which typically form in areas of high sun exposure such as the face, neck, chest and hands, represent damaged skin from sun over exposure.  Those “cute freckles” are in fact an indication of damage and would not otherwise be there if you had not been in the sun.  Additional factors detracting from the youthful skin appearance include acne, scarring, rosacea, inherited large pore size, birthmarks, hormonal induced pigmentation such as melasma, and prominent veins.
